Lowrance: The Politics of Form, Authorship, and Distribution is a found footage experimental documentary project through which the filmmaker undertakes the de/reconstruction of the seminal 1962 film Lawrence of Arabia as well as the public persona of the historic "T.S. Lawrence" and one of the stars of the film actor Omar Al-Sharif. Through irony, humour and contempt the filmmaker dredges through moving image digital archives to create a collage of news footage, film material, music as well as digital martial web-based content. In the process, the project disrespects the film canon, questions the hero’s journey and explores the colonial dimension not just of filmmaking’s representations but also its funding and distribution.
Muhammad Nour-Elkhairy is a Palestinian filmmaker, video artist and programmer from Jordan and is currently pursuing his MFA in Studio Arts: Film Production at Concordia University in Montreal, Canada. Muhammad’s work is interested in opening a political dialogue around national, ethnic and social identity.
About WIP:
The workshop is meant to showcase new and developing projects by the Fine Arts graduate community (and beyond), creating a space for interdisciplinary critique and feedback. Encouraging the engagement of workshop participants, the emphasis will be on research methodologies and future directions. We aim to create a space for alternative methodologies and practices, investigating research trends in the humanities such as visual anthropology, digital ethnography, field recording and sound experiments, approaches to information technologies, and other on the ground research practices. The 2019-2020 program is convened by Ylenia Olibet, Lola Rémy, and Patrick Brodie.
